Another dull weekend for the China Box office as the top 10 movies garnered around $45 million for the last weekend which had a Hollywood new release The Predator. The reboot of the successful first film Predator had a disappointing outing at the domestic box office and an average performance in overseas markets. The brand helped out for an opening reception that fell short due to the bad word of mouth.
The movie opened at China on October 26 and posted a $20 million opening weekend at the box office of Middle Kingdom. The film had a pretty good opening screen count and the word of mouth will play the role in coming days. Lack of new big releases in the market is another reason for the film to have performed well so far and the movie drought in the region is evident with the slump moving box office.
With the superhero film Venom releasing for the coming weekend in China, this will probably end its dream run and slow down giving the spotlight to another film with an average reviews, better than the previous title though. The Chinese film Crystal Sky of Yesterday took the second weekend spot with $7 million followed by the Hong Kong Crime drama Project Gutenberg which collected more than $6.5 million making cumulative total of $172 million.
Hollywood animation film Smallfoot grabbed the fourth spot with $3 million and the Indian Comedy drama Hichki collected $2.8 million in its third weekend taking its total to $17 million at the China box office so far in 17 days. Last weekend toppers Lost, Found and The Spy Who Dumped Me dropped to the sixth and tenth spot respectively with the Spy film showing poor performance after the opening weekend.
Other newly released films of China, Kunfu League and Crazy Little Thing didn’t make much impression at the box office collecting $1.8 million and $1.4 million respectively taking the seventh and eighth weekend spot.
