Donald Trump on Wednesday made false claims about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago.

In a controversial interview, Trump inaccurately suggested that Harris had only recently begun to identify as Black, claiming that she had previously only highlighted her Indian heritage.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump remarked.

He added, “But she obviously doesn't because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a black person.”

Harris, who is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, has consistently embraced her diverse heritage. She attended Howard University, a leading historically Black college, and is a member of the historically Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.

In her role as a U.S. senator, she was an active member of the Congressional Black Caucus and supported key legislation on voting rights and policing reform.

Trump’s remarks come amidst a broader pattern of investigating the backgrounds of minority opponents. Since Harris recently emerged as a prominent figure on the Democratic ticket, Trump’s comments have been part of a wider effort to undermine her dependability and challenge her identity.
