Cancer, one of the important source of increasing mortality on Earth. According to the survey 1 in every 6 deaths is due to cancer and it is believed to be hiked in next two decades if it goes down the path at the same speed. As long as we talk about Cancer we certainly have to concern the extreme treatment that given for this diseases known as Chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy is the drug inducing treatment that helps to knock down the fast-proliferating cancer cells as soon as possible. Even though the chemotherapy is considered as the most relevant treatment for cancer its side effects seem to be more horrible in some cases. As unfortunately, the chemo drug sometimes induce a significant damage to other normal cells like the cells in the stomach, hair follicles, nails, liver etc... either temporarily or permanently. Hence sometimes the side effects of Chemotherapy is termed as second cancer.
Even though the possibility of worst side effect shows up in a minimum level the patient's thoughts about side effect might be a real short of depression than the disease. However, cancer institutes across the world are managed to come up with an idea to control the worst side effects of some extreme cancer therapies. According to the recent research, a personalized cancer therapy that based on the genetic profile of the patient could largely help the therapists to make a targetted approach to the disease.
Doctors and scientists from Dana-Farber, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Hospital and medical center form up to be a team called Oncopanel to collect genomics data of each and every Cancer types. The scientists of that institute initiated this idea in 2009 and collected around 30,000 test results of genetic mutation of cancer patients and found nearly 400 mutated cases and also survived cases.
As the cancer is the factor caused by genetic mutation influenced by some physical, chemical and biological agents of the environment this data will help the doctors to understand cancer on a rational basis.
According to Barret J Rollins, the chief scientific officer of Dana-Farber the Genetic profile on every cancer patients would deeply enable the possibilities of identifying the genetic mutation of the cancer cells and it will probably help directing the way of therapy in future.
Rollins said that every cancer has unique characteristics in accordance with the gene of a person. The deeper knowledge of those characteristics could improve the clinicians to diagnose the disease and mark the target for the treatment. Apart from the genetic profiling DNA tests will also make an immense contribution to individual level cancer therapy.
She said that while entering the targeted cancer treatment under the lead of genetic profile there will be a long ray of hope for preventing worst consequences of cancer treatment and it will be like a new positive era in cancer treatment.
