Cat Tested Positive for Rabies in Alberta which Bit its Owner and his Son

 A cat of nine-year-old indoor-outdoor cat on a farm nearLongView seems highly aggressive and bit it�s owner son and the owner lastweek, according to the Chief Provincial Veterinarian Clinic Officer.

Both of them sought immediate help from the hospital andimmediately receive treatment to prevent the spread of the disease.  Other habitants of the farm are four othercats and two dogs are now were kept at three-month quarantine and had beeninjected post-exposure rabies vaccination.

The virus present in this aggressive cat was very consistentwith the bat variant of the virus according to Canadian Food InspectionAgency.  If a cat hunt an infected bat,the virus enters the cat�s body in no time. This fatal virus disease spread if the infected cat bite any animal orman.

Nine months ago, an Alberta man was bitten by a bat,  became infected, which affected the neuronsof the brain nine month ago and he was the 24th person to die of rabies.  The time of the infection depends on the distanceof the virus must travel along the peripheral nerves to reach the centralnervous system and the infection causes inflammation on the brain. 

The last two instances of a cat testing positive for rabiesafter contracting the virus locally were in 2006 and another in 2010.  A puppy has also been tested positive for thearctic fox variant of the virus in the year 2013, after it had moved fromNunavut to Calgary.  The virus istransmitted through the lick onto an existing cut or mucous membrane.  Spreading human to human is very rare.

Nine bats have tested positive for rabies so far this yearin Alberta were present in both urban and rural areas and moved freelyeverywhere.  The province�s chiefVeterinarian office stated that only through vaccination the pets can beprotected, which in turn helps human health.
